Local Illustrator, Alison Edgson, visits Montessori School
Local Illustrator, Alison Edgson, visits Montessori School uly 6th, Alison Edgson, a renowned local children’s illustrator, visited Monmouth Montessori School. She spent the afternoon with a group of 4 – 7yr olds, looking at some of the books she has illustrated and answering questions about her work. Alison’s latest book by Little Tiger Press is ‘A Little Fairy Magic’ about a little mouse called Phoebe who loves her new fairy costume but can she really do fairy magic? Alison then helped the children each make a 3D picture of their own Phoebe mouse.
Visit to One Planet
We were very luck to visit the One Planet recycling centre near Abergavenny, as it hasn't even opened to the public yet! We all had a wonderful time learning about recycling and what happens to our waste.
Fire!
We all visited the local fire station in Monmouth, and enjoyed learning about fire safety, firemans equipment, and even had a go at squirting the fire hose.

Tennis
A team from Yrs 3 and below competed in a local tennis tournament at Usk Tennis Club. Everybody did really well with most winning at least one game. It was a great experience for everybody to put into practise everything they learnt during their tennis week. The team was Eliza, James, Erin and Tallulah with Poppy and Marek in reserve.

Montessori’s New Football Squad
An inaugural football match between Monmouth Montessori School and Cross Ash School took place on Friday. Cross Ash fielded a talented team of Year 5 & 6 pupils taking on a team from Monmouth Montessori School, Years’ 2 to 6.
Cross Ash’s experience won the day with a 13-0 win. However, Monmouth Montessori’s fledgling team fought bravely with great defensive tactics and gained much from the experience. Monmouth Montessori School are delighted to have secured the services of coach Richard Wilson, formerly at Bristol City and now with his own coaching company whose client list includes Center Parcs. Starting this term, he has been teaching football and ball skills.
This match was a great opportunity for the children to try out their new skills and everyone is very much looking forward to a return match.

Sponsored Run
The sponsored run turned out to be a huge success with all involved from 2 – 11 years taking part. All the children showed determination and enthusiasm for the event with special mention to Rebecca and Harry who would still be running now if they had not been asked to finish! The stalls were well supported by parents, friends and relatives. A fun afternoon that raised close to £1000 for PTA funds.Well done to all concerned !

Monmouth Montessori School gets ready for Election Day
The children of Monmouth Montessori School have been gripped by election fever.
Monmouth Montessori School will become a polling station on May 6th and the children have been keen to find out more about the coming election. David Davies, local parliamentary candidate and Nursery parent, kindly agreed to come and talk to the children on the workings of Parliament and what happens during an election. He underwent intense grilling on what is
involved in being an MP. Inspired, the children will be holding their own mock election on May 5th.
The opinion polls are unclear but it looks like it will be a close run thing, with our own Monster Raving Loony Party doing rather well! On May 6th the School and Nursery will enjoy a trip to Noah’s Ark in Bristol whilst voting takes place.

Transition Monmouth Orchard Project
This week we were fortunate to receive an invitation from Vivien Mitchell of the steering group, to bring some children along to help with ground preparation prior to planting. Eight of the oldest children donned gloves and wellies and got down to some serious weeding. During a welcome break, we enjoyed drinks and snacks with the volunteers on a beautiful, sunny, autumn day which showed off the chosen location at its best. Once planted, it will bring a new lease of life to a previously overgrown field.
Transition Monmouth is a voluntary group whose aim is to tackle eco issues like climate change and peak oil with a view to providing a sustainable future for Monmouth and the surrounding area.
In April 2009 Transition Monmouth Food Group decided to make a community orchard a priority. Permission was granted by Monmouth County Council to use part of the Millennium Field for their first orchard. Initial meetings with experts helped the group draw up plans for planting appropriate to the area and the hard work really started in September 2009.
We hope to be able to attend the planting of the orchard during November and follow the progress of the project thereafter.
